There is so much going on this summer I am going to need greeting cards for–Graduations, Birthdays, Weddings, Father’s Day etc.– So, I thought it would be a great idea to make my own cards. I have also been looking up watercolor tutorials on pinterest and I decided this would be a useful way to test my watercolor skills. I got this idea from a tutorial on Damask Love, although I did the lettering on my cards in a different way. You can make all sorts of paper products using this technique, including place cards, invitations or gift tags.
What you will need:
- White oil pastel
- Watercolor Paint Set & Paint Brushes
- Normal Pencil
- Scissors
- Envelope
- Card stock
- Bowl of Water
First, cut your card stock to the size of the envelope if it is not already the correct size. And fold the card in half.
I typed out what I wanted the front of the card to say on Microsoft Word and then held the front of the card up to my computer and traced the words with my oil pastel (I also tried using a white colored pencil, but that didn’t work very well).
Then, paint over your words with water color. To get a ombre effect: use very little water on the paint brush for darker colors. Then to get the lighter color, dip your paint brush into the paint and then in the water again, wiping your paint brush against the edge of the bowl to get excess water off. I made sure the bottom of the card didn’t get too dark by testing the color of the paint on the middle of the card and then painting down toward where I wanted the lighter color to be. Once you get the desired look on your card, leave it out to dry and to admire your work. I especially love how the ombre cards turned out and I am excited to try more watercolor projects.
